| | Advice about the use of home bleaching kits. What you should have: - Custom made tray for your upper teeth.
- Custom made tray for your lower teeth
- 12 syringes of 10% carbamide peroxide gel, enough for 72 hours of whitening.
When not using the home bleaching kit - Store the custom trays in the container provided and keep them safe, because they are fragile.
- Keep the syringes refrigerated (NOT frozen).
To use the kit - Leave the syringe of carbamide peroxide currently in use out of the fridge. It works more quickly if warm.
- Dispense the carbamide peroxide in a thin layer into each of the custom trays. Each syringe is adequate for three applications to both trays. Do not overfill, because only the thin layer touching the teeth is effective.
- Gently press the trays into place, and leave over the teeth for a maximum of two hours. By two hours the gel has degraded and will no longer have any further bleaching effect.
- Take the trays out and wash your mouth thoroughly with water.
- Wash off the gel from the trays under running tap water.
- Do not repeat the process the same day.
Possible problems and how to deal with them - The tray is rubbing against your gum.
- Use sharp nail scissors and carefully cut a little of the tray away. Repeat until the tray is comfortable.
- You are suffering from sensitivity of your teeth.
- Don’t use the bleach for two or three days, and then resume by bleaching your upper teeth one night and your lower teeth the next. The bleaching will take longer, but the sensitivity should reduce. You may use desensitising toothpastes after each session, if you find this helps.
How long will it take to lighten the teeth? With this strength of carbamide peroxide you can expect to see definite improvement in two weeks with a daily application. To achieve the lightest possible can take up to month, and sometimes longer with darker teeth. After a year or two, you may wish to restore the lighter colour by using the gel for a fortnight.
