Tooth whitening

Tooth whitening works best when your teeth are naturally quite white, and it then adds that extra sparkle. The darker your teeth the longer it will take, requiring frequent sessions. If your teeth have surface stains, tartar, and plaque these need to be removed prior to whitening. For example a heavy smoker is likely to need an hour's hygienist appointment immediately prior to whitening.

Are there any problems with tooth whitening?

  • There can be increased sensitivity to hot and cold, but this will disappear after treatment. It may also mean that you will need to whiten at a slower rate, perhaps over two months.
  • If you have fillings and crowns, these will not whiten. Therefore, after whitening you may need to have fillings replaced, so they match newly whitened teeth.
